Middle East: Hamas seeks clarification and the right to change on Trump’s plan

The Palestinian organisation wants a distinction between offensive and defensive weapons, regarding its disarmament - Rules out foreign rule of the Strip - Calls for a timetable for the withdrawal of Israeli troops

Newsroom October 1 05:40

Hamas has sought clarification from mediators on several provisions of the US plan to end the war in Gaza, according to a source from the organization who spoke to the Saudi channel Al-Hadath. The same source claimed that Hamas believes it has the right to request amendments to the plan, as was the case on the Israeli side.

The source explained that Hamas insists on the distinction between defensive and offensive weapons, referring to the provision in the agreement that provides for the disarmament of the organization.“Defensive weapons are a right of Hamas, he noted, adding that the organization rejects any possibility of an international organization taking over the administration of the Gaza Strip. “Governance must remain in the hands of Palestinians, even if they have nothing to do with politics, he stressed.

Call for a clear timetable

According to the same official, Hamas is also demanding a clear timetable for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, accompanied by guarantees that ensure a definitive end to the war.

The US plan, it is reported, envisages that the withdrawal will be “performance-based” and will proceed in stages depending on the implementation of the terms of the agreement.
