A plan by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to counter Russian disinformation — which under normal circumstances should have remained shrouded in secrecy — was revealed due to the negligence of French diplomats, according to the French newspaper Le Canard Enchaîné.
The article, titled “The French Foreign Ministry on a spy hunt,” points out that “at a time when France is trying to regain control in the influence war against Moscow, a €40-million-per-year plan to combat Russian disinformation was exposed because the ministry’s services didn’t even bother to classify this sensitive project as ‘secret.’”
Among the proposed measures in the plan are “unattributed” campaigns that can be justified if their origin is ever revealed, the production of unofficial videos on “sensitive” issues concerning the country’s “competitors,” as well as targeted leaks against foreign officials.
According to the report, an internal investigation is underway within the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to determine who is responsible for the disclosure of the plan’s existence.
