Tragedy in Santorini: 6-year-old boy drowns in hotel pool – Photo from the scene

The child was in a group of tourists from India - His parents, who were also in the pool, could not explain how the child lost consciousness and drowned

Newsroom October 11 03:23

A heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday morning in Santorini, when a 6-year-old boy tragically drowned in a hotel swimming pool in the area of Kamari, where he was staying with his parents. The child was part of a tourist group from India that had arrived on the island for vacation.

According to protothema.gr, although several people were present at the pool at the time, no one noticed that the boy had sunk to the bottom. It is believed that he swallowed a significant amount of water, lost consciousness, and remained unnoticed underwater. Shockingly, both of his parents, aged 33 and 32, were also at the pool area but failed to realize that their child was in danger.

The most disturbing detail is that, according to reports, the child was only discovered when another swimmer accidentally kicked him underwater. This horrifying moment triggered panic among those present.

The boy was immediately pulled from the pool, and desperate efforts were made to revive him using CPR and a defibrillator that was available on-site. Despite the heroic attempts by hotel staff and bystanders, the child did not respond.

An ambulance from the National Emergency Medical Service (EKAV) arrived at the scene within seven minutes and transported the boy to the hospital in Thira. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Further compounding the tragedy is the fact that, according to available information, no lifeguard was present at the pool during the incident. This raises serious concerns about the safety measures in place at the hotel.

Hotel management is now urgently trying to locate the necessary documentation proving the pool’s operational license, while authorities have initiated an investigation to determine whether there were any oversights either by the establishment or by the boy’s parents.

The police have already made preliminary arrests and are examining the possibility of negligence or insufficient supervision. The parents may face charges and appear in court, depending on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.

In a photo obtained by protothema.gr, the hotel pool where the tragedy unfolded can be seen, now sealed off with police tape as the investigation continues.

This devastating incident has shocked the local community and raises urgent questions about safety protocols in tourist accommodations, especially when children are involved.

Mitsotakis: “Farmers will receive every euro they are entitled to — Solutions come through dialogue, not roadblocks”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis assured farmers that all payments owed to them will be delivered in full, emphasizing that while agricultural workers have every right to demand more support, “extreme forms of protest, such as roadblocks, may exert pressure but ultimately disrupt daily life and do not help us move forward faster”
