Slovakia: At least 66 people injured after two trains collide

Two trains crashed this morning in eastern Slovakia, derailing an engine and a carriage and injuring at least 66 people, according to emergency services and police.

There were no reports of fatalities in the collision, which police said occurred in front of a tunnel near the village of Jablonov nad Turňou, about 55 kilometers west of eastern Slovakia’s largest city, Kosice.

According to emergency medical services, 16 people suffered serious or moderate injuries, and at least 50 were slightly injured.

Visual footage posted by police on Facebook showed debris as well as the derailed engine and a wagon lying on a hillside after the collision, which occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. (local time, 11:00 a.m. GMT).

Police said about 80 passengers were estimated to have been on board the train.

Slovak Railways said the trains collided at a point where the railway lines cross and become one line, and that the cause of the collision was being investigated.
