Weather: Two consecutive barometers bring heavy rains – Athens Marathon without problems

EMY forecasts bad weather with heavy rain and thunderstorms in western and northern Greece at the weekend - The Marathon will be held smoothly on Sunday

Newsroom November 7 09:40

Two barometric lows from Italy will bring high rainfall mainly in western and northern Greece, but without affecting the conduct of the Classical Marathon of Athens (8 and 9/11), according to meteorologists.

Cloudy weather will be over the next two days in the country, with scattered showers and local thunderstorms, according to the National Meteorological Service forecast. According to meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias, two successive barometric lows coming from Italy are expected to significantly affect western and northern Greece, bringing heavy rainfall.

The first wave of bad weather will start at dawn Saturday and last until Sunday morning, causing heavy rain and thunderstorms mainly in the western parts. From Sunday until Monday, a second low from Italy will again cause severe weather in the same areas, while in the remaining parts of the country the weather will remain relatively mild.

Winds will be southerly with intensities of up to 6-7 Beaufort, also carrying amounts of African dust towards the southernmost areas. Temperatures will not show any significant change, remaining at normal levels for the season.

The meteorologist warns that in western Greece, where the rains will last for several hours, soils will become over-saturated, increasing the risk of localised flooding in vulnerable areas. At the same time, as it clarifies, Attica will not be affected by the severe weather, which means that the Athens Classic Marathon on Sunday 9 November will take place normally and without problems.

In the same vein, Thodoris Kolydas also has a prognosis, referring to the two new barometric lows, but reassuring those who intend to run the Athens Marathon.

“Strongly wintry weather conditions for the third ten days of the month are given by our global forecast system “Heracles”,” meteorologist Klearhos Marousakis said in a post.
