Novak Djokovic dedicated his victory at the Hellenic Championship to the Greeks – The “performance” that drew all eyes in Athens

The huge match at the Telekom Center with Musetti in the presence of Mitsotakis, “officials” and guest star Tsitsipas – “Thank you, for everything” wrote the Serbian tennis star in Greek

Newsroom November 9 09:39

Extremely impressive was the beginning at the Hellenic Championship 250, the new tournament that made its appearance in the tennis world. At the Telecom Center in Athens the presence of major athletes, but also… officials in the stands laid the foundations for Greek presence in the future of the sport. In fact the three-hour competitive performance Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti gave in the final yesterday afternoon was the best advertisement for the Athens tournament.

In the end, the Serb who is slowly becoming… Greek, Novak Djokovic, was the one who celebrated breaking the barrier of 100 career titles. In an impressive final he prevailed with a comeback (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) and won the first title of the Hellenic Championship. The Serbian tennis player celebrated with the crowd his 101st career title and he did it in an incredible way. After the end of the championship point, Nole ripped his shirt bursting with passion and excitement, offering yet another highlight to the night.

“It’s like my home”
When the lights went down, Novak Djokovic celebrated his success with his family who naturally is in Athens. In a post he made late last night on Instagram he dedicated his victory to the Greeks who support him and tennis, while he thanked everyone in Greek.

He wrote in detail: “I dedicate the victory to the amazing people of Greece. You support me, you support tennis and you make me feel like this is my home. A victory that I feel very special as my family was here. Gratitude also to all those who made this beautiful new tournament so special. Thank you for everything.

As for Lorenzo Musetti, it was an epic battle. Congratulations for a fantastic performance and tournament. Keep going, your future is bright.”

“Mitsotakis” was present and many “officials”

Greece after 31 years hosted an ATP tournament and Greeks were lucky since the athlete with the most Grand Slams in history reached the final, Novak Djokovic. In yesterday’s final at OAKA there were many… officials, among them Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who also watched Novak Djokovic’s semifinal a few days earlier. The Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis also attended the final.

At the Telekom Center Athens also were the president of Olympiakos BC, Panagiotis Angelopoulos and Thomas Walkup with Estrella Nouri and also Giorgos Karagounis.

In the stands of the indoor OAKA it would be impossible for Stefanos Tsitsipas not to be there with the Greek tennis player enjoying the tournament in his homeland and being particularly smiling. He was naturally the big absentee from the Athens Open, as an injury problem did not allow him to participate.

After the award ceremony, the 28-year-old tennis player took pictures with the two finalists and had the chance to… chat with both Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti.

“This week Greece hosted its first ATP tournament since 1994. The first since I was born. Even though I could not participate, I enjoyed from the stands the triumph of Novak Djokovic, which made him the first tennis player to win a title in 20 different countries.”
