“We are obliged to follow a specific procedure for the tenders involving the installation of cameras on the roads,” Mr. Chrysochoidis stated in an interview with SKAI 100.3, clarifying that the installation of the first 1,000 cameras is expected to begin in June of next year.

He noted that the system’s operation will fall under the Ministry of Infrastructure, while the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) will be able to issue electronic fines for traffic violations through it.

Referring to the cameras of the Attica Region, he pointed out that there was a delay in their installation due to “certain issues, which I don’t know precisely.”

At the same time, he revealed that in the coming days, the Ministry of Citizen Protection will submit a bill introducing body cameras (bodycams) for police officers.

Regarding possible delays by the Data Protection Authority, the minister emphasized:

“There is European legislation. No one can do whatever they want. The pace of many authorities and services is extremely slow, and sometimes I also react because there is a general laxity that is infuriating. It’s important to see how the public sector can operate more quickly and efficiently.”
