As part of the promotion for Bugonia, Emma Stone appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she was asked about a particularly funny moment from Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film. In the scene, her character is kidnapped by two men (played by Jessie Plemons and Aidan Delves) wearing Jennifer Aniston masks.

“They bought them from a store,” Stone explained. “It’s one of those moments that completely catches you off guard—you’re laughing but also kind of scared, wondering what’s going on with those masks. This isn’t a spoiler—it happens right at the start of the movie.”
The actress went on to reveal a surprising behind-the-scenes detail:
“Originally, the masks were supposed to be something else—like Rambo or something. But our director, Yorgos [Lanthimos], is obsessed with Friends. Which sounds crazy if you know Yorgos—you wouldn’t expect him to know everything about Friends.”
Seth Meyers agreed, laughing: “When you watch one of his films, you definitely don’t think, ‘This guy loves Friends.’”
Stone added:
“Maybe we should, though. His movies are funny, just in a very different way than Friends. He can literally answer any question about the show.”
She continued with another amusing anecdote:
“One day he said, ‘What if the masks were Ross and Rachel?’ I thought, that’s pretty random, but kind of hilarious. Then he goes, ‘Actually, I think both masks should be Rachel.’ Jessie [Plemons] and I were like, why? And he just said, ‘I don’t know—I think it would be funny.’ And, of course, he was right.”
“So we emailed Jennifer Aniston about it,” Stone revealed, “and she replied, ‘Sounds like a great idea—go for it!’ But I don’t think she’s seen the movie yet. I hope she likes it.”
