Dimitris Stamatis, former Minister and ND MP, passed away

Dimitris Stamatis, former minister and member of parliament for New Democracy (ND), passed away at the age of 75 after a long battle with a serious illness. Among his various roles, he served as the president of the Deposits and Loans Fund

Born in Thessaloniki, Stamatis was a lifelong resident of the city, where he lived with his wife and two children. He studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and practiced as a lawyer.

Stamatis was first elected as an MP for Thessaloniki A constituency with New Democracy in 1985, serving until 1993. He also held the position of General Secretary at the former Ministry of Transport and Communications. Between 2005 and 2009, he served as General Secretary of the then Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

On June 21, 2012, he was sworn in as Minister of State in the coalition government led by New Democracy’s Antonis Samaras, overseeing the smooth coordination among government partners.

In the January 2015 parliamentary elections, Stamatis was elected from the second position on New Democracy’s nationwide party list.

Antonis Samaras, under whose government Stamatis served, bid farewell to him, saying:
“Goodbye, Dimitris! You left as you lived — proud, upright, honest, and a fighter. You were always a great and selfless patriot. Farewell, my friend! Farewell, my brother!”
