Skirtsos on Greece-US agreements: “Ethics can produce wealth”

The Minister of State comments on the benefits for the country of taking a pro-Ukrainian position from the beginning of the Russian invasion until today

Newsroom November 19 12:06

Greece’s consistent support for Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion is now paying off, says Akis Skertsos in a recent post.

The Minister of State highlights the “economic validation and geopolitical reward” Greece is seeing thanks to the principled stance the Prime Minister took when the war in Ukraine began. This comes as Greece and the US recently finalized major energy and geopolitical agreements.

“Good morning!

Yes, ethics can create wealth.

In the past few days, we’ve seen how standing firmly on principles can bring both economic benefits and geopolitical gains. This is the result of the Greek Prime Minister’s unwavering stance when Russia illegally invaded Ukraine.

So, what exactly did Greece say back then—clearly and without hesitation? That we stand with the defender, never with the aggressor who violates a country’s sovereignty.

Why did we take this position?

First and foremost, because it’s the right thing to do. We’re a peaceful nation, with a deep tradition of humanitarianism and solidarity with those in need. It would have been unthinkable not to support an ally with whom we share historic ties, especially when it was facing brutal aggression.

But beyond ethics, this position is also in our national interest. How could we oppose Turkey’s illegal occupation of Cyprus if we didn’t take a stand against any invasion or breach of sovereignty? Who would take us seriously on the world stage?

This stance hasn’t gone unchallenged. It’s faced criticism from pro-Russian factions who admire authoritarianism and resent democracy. It’s also been questioned by those who favor a cautious “equidistant” diplomacy, trying to stay neutral to avoid upsetting anyone.

And some argue that principles are nice, but what does Greece actually gain from them?

The past two weeks have answered that question loud and clear.

Our recent major energy and geopolitical deals with the US are reshaping Europe’s energy landscape. They put Greece at the heart of a future of energy dominance and prosperity.

This success vindicates a foreign policy that is not only morally sound but also strategically smart. It reflects an energy strategy focused on diversifying sources to secure our energy independence—exactly as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis envisioned and implemented.

This is a policy that boldly chooses to stand on the right side of history—without hesitation—and it’s being rewarded for it.

It takes time, patience, and perseverance for such a principled approach to pay off. But Greece’s political stability, credibility, and consistency over recent years have earned that time.
