Weather alert: Storms, hail, mud rain and powerful winds set to hit Greece — Thursday will be a challenge

Greece is bracing for a sharp weather deterioration over the next few hours, with Thursday shaping up to be a particularly challenging day

Newsroom November 26 04:12

Thunderstorms, hailstorms, and episodes of mud rain are expected across large parts of the country, while a severe weather bulletin issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) remains in force through Friday.

Heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms have already begun affecting several regions since early Wednesday, hitting Corfu and Epirus with strong intensity. According to forecasts from meteo.gr, the weather system will strengthen significantly tonight. The Ionian Islands, western mainland Greece, the Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace will all experience worsening conditions, with the western parts seeing locally violent storms and hail.

By the early hours of Thursday, the storm front will have spread across much of the country.

A Wild Thursday Ahead

Throughout Thursday, intense to very intense rainfall and thunderstorms will strike the Ionian Islands, western Greece, the Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace — many accompanied by large hailstones.
Even regions outside the main storm path, including Athens and Thessaloniki, will face rain and sporadic storms, some briefly severe.

At sea, southerly winds of 6–8 Beaufort will create hazardous conditions, while a surge of Saharan dust will produce episodes of thick mud rain.

Friday: The Storm System Moves East — But Doesn’t Let Up

On Friday, the severe system — named ADEL — continues its march eastward, hammering the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese with heavy rain, thunderstorms, powerful winds and high dust concentrations.
Western Greece may see improvement only toward the early morning.

Emergency Preparedness at Maximum Level

As conditions intensify, Greece’s Civil Protection authorities convened an emergency inter-ministerial meeting on Wednesday.
Fire services, armed forces, police, coast guard, regional authorities, utilities, and emergency medical services have all been placed on heightened alert, while EMY has issued a RED CODE warning for Central and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
