Sydney: 24-year-old Bodai Beach terror attack suspect wakes up from coma

Navid Akram's health remains unclear, according to police - he had arrived in Sydney with his father in November

Newsroom December 16 11:32

Islamist Navid Akram, 24, one of the two perpetrators of the deadly terrorist attack on Sydney‘s Bodai Beach during a Jewish Hanukkah event, has woken from a coma, police told the Sydney Morning Herald. Akram was shot and seriously injured during the attack and was treated in a critical condition.

According to the report, his exact state of health remains unclear at this time, and authorities have not provided further details on whether he is able to testify or be questioned.

Navid Akram carried out the attack, causing the deaths of 15 people along with his father, Sajid Akram, 50, who was killed by police gunfire as security forces intervened.

Australian authorities have described the incident as an act of terrorism with clear anti-Semitic motives and are continuing to investigate how the attackers organised the attack and whether they had contacts with extremist networks. At the same time, authorities are on heightened alert, while the country’s Jewish community is under tight security measures.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Department of Immigration said the 50-year-old and the 24-year-old arrived in Sydney from the Philippines on November 1, 2025.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the deputy director general and spokesman for the Philippine National Security Council said authorities have not confirmed any links between terrorist groups and the two men.

In the mean time, the inability for 20 minutes of two female police officers that were on the scene to intervene during the shootings, although they were in an small proximity from the perpetrators, is still causing outrage in Australia and globally on social media.
