On Sunday in Malgara, farmers decide on next steps – Which points are open and where blockades remain ahead of New Year

Farmers will be asked to decide the next steps of their mobilisation

Newsroom December 30 04:00

Farmers will be called on January 4 to decide on the next steps of their mobilizations. The Promachonas border crossing will close at 16:00 for three hours, the Patras ring road has reopened, while Central Greece has no blockades but traffic diversions.

On Sunday, January 4, at 12:00 noon, a nationwide meeting of people from the primary sector will take place in Malgara, in order to decide on the next steps of their mobilizations, at a time when blockades are being relaxed in parts of the country to facilitate New Year holiday travel.

The nationwide meeting will be held at the Malgara Cultural Center, as announced by Kostas Rouzios, a member of the board of the Kymina–Malgara Farmers’ Association in Thessaloniki. The news was also confirmed by the Secretariat of the Panhellenic Blockades Committee in a statement:

“The Secretariat of the Panhellenic Blockades Committee salutes the thousands of farmers, livestock breeders, beekeepers and fishermen who have remained at the dozens of blockades set up across the country for a month now, fighting for their survival. With the majority of the Greek people on our side, we have repelled every attempt by the government to slander and undermine our just struggle. Neither repression, nor social division, nor calls for sham dialogue, nor mud, slander and pressure, nor attempts to break our unity through various ‘willing’ actors have bent us. All of this only increases our anger and determination in the face of the government’s intransigence. We call on the blockades, following decisions by their General Assemblies, to participate in the new nationwide meeting to be held on Sunday, January 4, at 12:00 noon, in Malgara, to discuss the escalation of our struggle and our next moves.

We say it once again: we will not retreat. We will not leave with our heads bowed. We are not backing down. We are not afraid. We will not yield. We will not sell out. We will win, because our struggle is a struggle for survival. Let the government and all those who support it in one way or another understand this. We welcome 2026 in a fighting spirit, at the blockades, together with our colleagues, our families and all the people.

We continue – we escalate – we will win!”

Which farming blockades have opened today – Where road closures will continue

Meanwhile, hundreds of trucks began passing through the Promachonas border checkpoint in the early hours of Tuesday, after farmers opened the blockade at around 06:00. As announced, it will close again at 16:00 for three hours.

The border station had remained closed for about 18 hours, since noon on Monday, and farmers had shown an intention to keep it closed for longer. However, according to public broadcaster ERT, following pressure from police and traffic authorities over road safety issues caused by the prolonged presence of large numbers of trucks at the site, the blockade was lifted early in the morning and traffic gradually resumed.

No closures today at Bralos, Atalanti, Kastro, Thiva and Chalkida

Farmers participating in blockades in Central Greece are currently in a phase of temporary arrangements aimed at facilitating New Year holiday travel. Following yesterday’s escalation of protests with closures including service roads, no closures are planned today at key points of the road network. Instead, contacts continue with local police authorities for local traffic arrangements to facilitate both outbound and return travel.

It was also announced that near Kastro, one lane in each direction on the PATHE motorway will remain open until January 5.

Specifically, blockades at Bralos, Atalanti, Kastro and Thiva remain without closures, with a similar situation in Chalkida. Farmers state that their intention is not to inconvenience citizens traveling for the holidays. At the same time, they place responsibility on the police for what occurred in previous days, arguing that inconvenience was not their intention.

At the same time, organizational arrangements are underway for the movement of tractors so that both outbound and return traffic lanes remain open. According to farmers, further escalation of mobilizations is postponed until after New Year, with attention turning to the meeting of the Panhellenic Blockades Committee, which, they note, has not yet been scheduled.

Farmers remain at the Nikaia blockade – New traffic measures in force

In Nikaia, Larissa, farmers remain at the blockade, continuing their mobilizations and maintaining their presence at the site, in line with decisions taken by their coordinating body.

On Monday, December 29, farmers at the blockade proceeded to close local bypass roads as well, escalating their protests and increasing pressure on the government to meet their demands.

According to their statements, from today, Tuesday, December 30, part of the road network is expected to be reopened to facilitate holiday travel. Notably, shortly after 9:00 in the morning, the overpass in Nikaia was reopened, easing New Year travel.

At the same time, according to a police announcement, new temporary traffic measures came into force at 09:10 on Tuesday (December 30, 2025) on the PATHE motorway, near the Nikaia interchange, due to ongoing farmers’ mobilizations.

Nikaia overpass reopened

In the direction toward Athens, traffic for vehicles up to 3.5 tons has been suspended from the Platycampos interchange to the Kileler interchange, while vehicles over 3.5 tons are not allowed to travel from Platycampos to Velestino. All vehicles are diverted via the old Larissa–Volos National Road, re-entering the PATHE motorway from the Kileler or Velestino interchanges, depending on vehicle weight.

In the direction toward Thessaloniki, traffic has been suspended from the Nikaia interchange to the Platycampos interchange. Vehicles are diverted at the Nikaia interchange toward Larissa and, via the old Athens–Thessaloniki National Road and Karamanlis Avenue, re-enter the PATHE motorway from the Platycampos or Gyrtoni interchanges. On the exit branch of the Nikaia interchange, traffic must use the left lane only, with a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h.

At the same time, on the old Larissa–Athens National Road, all vehicles heading toward the PATHE motorway before the Nikaia interchange (IKEA overpass) are turned back and directed either to the Platycampos or Gyrtoni interchanges, depending on their destination.

Police advise drivers to follow road signs and traffic police instructions and to exercise increased caution.
