15-year low this year in traffic deaths for September and October, according to ELSTAT

This is the first two months of the implementation of the new traffic code, which provides for stricter penalties for serious offences and recidivist drivers, while at the same time confirming the clear downward trend in deaths on the road for the whole of 2025

Newsroom December 31 04:46

A 15-year low in the blood tax Greece “pays” on the roads was recorded this year for the two months of September and October, during which the full implementation of the new Road Traffic Code began.

According to the latest data from ELSTAT, in the first two months of autumn, a period of heavy traffic as it coincides with the start of the school year, the return of most summer holidaymakers and the lengthening of the tourist season, 85 people died on the asphalt nationwide and 88 were seriously injured.

This is the best performance for this particular two-month period since 2010, the first year for which the national statistics service has detailed data, while individually, in both September and October, we suffered fewer deaths due to road accidents than in any corresponding month in the last fifteen years.

Indicative of the improvement is that in September and October 2020, the number of road deaths rose to 133 and the number of seriously injured to 117. The figure in 2015 was 123 deaths and 162 serious injuries, while 240 people died and 285 suffered serious injuries on the country’s roads in 2010.

The ELSTAT data, combined with the particularly strong emphasis by the police on alcohol tests and automatic checks via advanced cameras, confirm the clear downward trend in road fatalities this year.

As the tables published today by the statistics authority show, in the ten months of the year, i.e., between January and October, almost 20% fewer people have lost their lives compared to the same period last year.

Data for the whole of 2025 is expected to be published by ELSTAT at the end of February.
