Easter in Pyrgos Santorini: The custom with thousands of lanterns – see video

During Holy Week Santorini is transformed into a spectacular setting full of handmade lanterns - The spectacle attracts visitors from all over the world who wish to live an authentic Easter experience

Newsroom April 8 12:14

One of the most impressive and special pastoral customs of Greece comes alive every year in Pyrgos Santorini.

During Holy Week, and especially on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, thousands of handmade lanterns are carefully placed in the alleys, on the steps, walls and roofs of the houses, creating a unique atmosphere that impresses every visitor.

A unique experience

At dusk, when the lanterns are lit one by one, the tower seems to be embraced by a warm, golden glow that highlights the architecture of the village and creates an almost cinematic setting that is making the rounds on social media.

The solemn atmosphere reaches its peak on Good Friday, when the procession of the Epitaph takes place through the illuminated cobbled streets. The chanting, the sounds of the bell and the candlelight create a unique experience, combining religious devotion with the unique aesthetics of the landscape.

On Holy Saturday, the anticipation of the Resurrection is accompanied by even more lights, while the whole settlement seems to participate in a great celebration of hope and rebirth.

The spectacle of lanterns spreading out in every corner of the village creates an impressive interplay of light and shadow, offering an experience that is hard to find elsewhere.
