Weather: Alcyonides until Friday with rising temperatures and weakening winds

Sunny weather after the cold and windy winds - Up to 16 degrees in Athens

Newsroom January 15 07:53

Windy days are forecast through Friday by meteorologist Nikos Kanteres, noting that, as in December, January’s weather is expected to show a temporary improvement, with sunshine, limited winds, and a noticeable temperature rise.

What are the Alcyonides, according to Aristotle

In his post, Nikos Kanteres recalls Aristotle’s definition of the Alcyonides days, describing them as those days of winter that follow periods of intense cold and strong winds and are characterized by sunshine, absence of clouds and precipitation, and very weakened winds. According to legend, these conditions allowed the alcyonas to spawn on the coast of Attica.

According to the meteorologist, in Athens, after the gusty winds and the low maximum temperatures of the previous days, when on Monday and Tuesday did not exceed 7 and 8 degrees Celsius, the mercury will rise. On Thursday and Friday, the temperature is expected to reach up to 16 degrees, with winds significantly weakened.

According to Nikos Kanteres’ assessment, the Alcyonides days will subside over the weekend, with the possibility of their reappearance in February. However, as he points out, their appearance is neither given nor fixed in time, as it is not a mandatory winter phenomenon.
