Cyprus: Police uncover safe house with 220 kg of cocaine and cannabis, seize weapons and explosives worth over €7 million

Two men aged 26 and 34 arrested – investigations continue to identify accomplices

Newsroom February 19 07:42

Authorities in Strovolos, Nicosia, uncovered a warehouse used by an organized criminal group to traffic drugs, following an operation by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Cyprus Police.

According to an official police briefing, counting was still underway, with officers having already recorded more than 160 kilograms of cannabis and over 60 kilograms of cocaine, bringing the total seizure close to 220 kilograms.

Weapons and explosives also seized

The warehouse contained far more than drugs. Police also found thousands of firecrackers, handguns, improvised explosive devices, ammunition, and €12,765 in cash at the same location.

Authorities arrested two men aged 26 and 34, who, according to available information, were not previously known to police. Officers placed both suspects in custody for questioning, while investigations continue to identify possible accomplices. The two men are expected to appear before a court tomorrow.

Police: seizure prevents 200,000 doses from reaching society

The head of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Christos Andreou, said the seizure prevents the distribution of approximately 200,000 doses of illegal substances within Cypriot society.

He added that the success comes during a period of heightened operational activity by the unit, stressing that most recent seizures result from targeted operations and intensified checks, particularly at Cyprus’s entry points.

Changing drug market

Authorities also note that the illicit substances market is evolving. As recently as January, police recorded a major case involving a synthetic cannabinoid (MDMB), considered significantly more potent and dangerous, underlining the growing complexity of drug trafficking in Cyprus.
