The installation of fixed and portable traffic monitoring cameras is being implemented on six major road axes in the capital, as well as on 10 buses operated by OSY, with the aim of enforcing traffic law violations and improving road safety.

The relevant decisions were posted on the “Diavgeia” transparency portal and provide for recording violations such as speeding, running red lights, mobile phone use, and failure to use seat belts or helmets.

The systems will be installed at key points with high traffic and high violation rates:

  • Syngrou Avenue (southbound, near Skra) — recording speed, mobile phone use, seat belt, and helmet use
  • Syngrou Avenue (northbound, near Thyateira & Priinis) — section control (average speed measurement)
  • Mesogeion–Chalandri Avenue — running red lights
  • Vouliagmenis–Tinos Avenue — running red lights
  • Amalias Avenue (in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) — red light, mobile phone, seat belt, helmet

Section control systems calculate the average speed between two points, making it virtually impossible to “slow down briefly” before a camera.

Cameras also on buses

At the same time, portable cameras will be placed on 10 buses operating on routes with heavy traffic. The main goal is to address illegal use of bus lanes, a phenomenon that on some routes exceeds 20–30% of total traffic.

The cameras will also record dangerous maneuvers, such as overtaking or cutting in front of buses when they depart from stops — incidents that often cause minor collisions.

The lines participating in the program include, among others, 550 (P. Faliro – Kifisia), A7 (Center – Kifisia), B5, 608, and E14 Express.

Goal: fewer accidents and more discipline

The initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance road safety through automated enforcement, which is considered internationally more effective than conventional policing.

By expanding the camera network, authorities aim to reduce both dangerous driving behaviors and unauthorized use of public transport infrastructure, while also improving traffic flow across the metropolitan area.
