“I’ve got a lot of people pointing a gun at me, don’t I?” said Donald Trump today, among other things, in light of the latest incident when invader at the US president’s residence in Mar-a-Lago in Florida was fatally wounded by his security detail.
In a speech at the Angel Families event, in memory of the victims of illegal immigrants in the US, the POTUS spoke about the assassination attempts against him.
It was his first public statement since the fatal shooting of 21-year-old man Austin Tucker Martin who attempted to enter the U.S. President’s Florida compound.
“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be here”
“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be here,” Donald Trump said during his speech. “I’ve got a lot of people pointing their guns at me, don’t I?” he stated.
On Saturday night, the president and First Lady Melania Trump were not at Mar-a-Lago, where they usually spend most weekends during the winter months – a facility dubbed the “Winter White House” – but in Washington, D.C., where they attended the Governors’ Dinner.
Monday’s event marked the president’s first public remarks since the incident. Trump has faced two major separate assassination attempts during the campaign for the 2024 presidential election.
Previous incidents
In July 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring Trump’s ear. The gunman was shot and killed on the spot by Secret Service agents at the event.
Two months later, in September, Ryan Wesley Routh pointed a firearm through bushes at Trump’s Palm Beach golf club while the president was playing golf. Routh initially fled, however he was located, arrested and charged with, among other things, attempted murder. Earlier this month he was sentenced to life in prison.
Compared himself to Kennedy and Lincoln
During his speech, Trump compared himself to presidents he said were considered particularly important to American history, such as John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, who were assassinated during their terms in office. Then, however, he added with obvious concern: “They only go after the important [presidents]. So maybe I want to be a little less important. Can we narrow it down a little bit?”
“Let’s be a regular president for a while,” he concluded.
