The U.S. aircraft carrier “USS Gerald R. Ford,” which had been operating in the Middle East in recent weeks, is expected to arrive in Souda later today, most likely around midday.
According to reports, the arrival is linked to refueling needs, while other information in recent days suggested that inspections may also be carried out on the ship due to the recent fire that broke out onboard.
It is recalled that a report by the New York Times a few days ago stated that the fire on the ship lasted more than 30 hours.
According to a statement from the U.S. Navy, the fire on the largest warship of the United States was not related to combat operations and resulted in two sailors being injured, though their lives are not in danger.
According to U.S. military officials and crew members, the fire broke out in the ship’s main laundry area, likely in a dryer ventilation duct, and then spread through the ventilation system to different sections of the vessel.
