The International Olympic Committee has introduced a new eligibility policy, excluding transgender athletes from women’s categories at the Olympic Games, ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
According to the IOC announcement, participation in any women’s category—whether in individual or team sports—will now be permitted only for “biological female individuals,” as determined through a one-time test of the SRY gene.
The decision is in line with a related executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump on women’s sports, which had been at the center of public debate ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games.
It remains unclear how many transgender women compete at the Olympic level.
The new policy is expected to affect participation frameworks in international competitions under the IOC’s authority as preparations continue for 2028.
