Wall Street Journal: Trump considers military operation to export half a ton of uranium from Iran

Such an operation could help achieve the US president's key goal of preventing Iran from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon

Newsroom March 30 08:24

Donald Trump is considering a military operation to export nearly half a ton of uranium from Iran, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal citing U.S. officials.

The mission would likely require U.S. forces to be on Iranian territory for days or more, according to the publication.

U.S. officials cited by the WSJ said, however, that the US president had not yet made a decision on whether to proceed while he was considering the risks to U.S. troops.

However, he remains generally open to the idea, as it could help achieve his main goal: preventing Iran from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said any Pentagon preparations “do not mean the president has made a decision,” according to the WSJ report.

Trump told reporters on Sunday night that Iran must comply with U.S. demands or “they won’t have a country,” while referring to Iran’s uranium. Trump said, “They will give us the nuclear dust.”
