The last farewell to journalist Thanos Economopoulos

He passed away at the age of 80 - His funeral at the A' Cemetery of Athens

At this hour, family and friends are saying their final goodbyes to journalist Thano Economopoulos, who passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at the age of 80.

Thanos Economopoulos was born in 1946 in Athens, Greece. He graduated in political science and economics from Panteion University and did postgraduate studies at the LSE. He began his journalistic career in 1968 at the newspaper “Nea Politia” as editor of the external bulletin.

He then worked as a diplomatic and political editor for the newspapers “Eleftheros Kosmos”, “Vradini”, “Express”, “Vima”, “Eleftheros Typos” and as a political commentator for the newspapers “Kathimerini” and “Ependidiotis”. He was also the head of information for the radio station “Athens 9,84”, a commentator for the radio station “Planet” and the chief editor of information for ET1. After his retirement in 2007 he remained active and was a columnist for 15 years on the website “iefimerida.gr”.

Fifteen years he spent 15 years in the post of editorial director of the “Elefimerida” magazine.
Thanos Ikonomopoulos had a top career in Greek journalism. For decades he was a well-trained, educated and socially sensitive man who criticized with solid arguments and clear positions without cries and populism. He was a man of noble and mild-mannered character and was beloved by all his colleagues, ESIEA said in its statement.
