A finding from yesterday’s GPO poll for the Star has piqued the interest of the Grand Maximos, as it shows that the… persistent strategy of self-reliance that New Democracy finds favorable ears, especially in a period of insecurity due to the war and while PASOK has drawn clear dividing lines stating that under no circumstances will it cooperate with the ruling party.
According to one finding of the survey, 51.7% of respondents prefer a self-reliant government even if it requires a repeat election, while 44.9% prefer a coalition government. In fact, another indicator shows 31.2% of respondents want ND and Kyriakos Mitsotakis to continue governing the country after the next elections, a five-point increase compared to the same company’s survey last January.
According to the analysis of experienced pollsters, in an environment of instability, citizens tend to rally around “institutional” political forces, the government has the political lead at the moment and is perhaps recording its best performance in almost two years. The environment may not be easy, but citizens seem to credit Mitsotakis with competence in crisis management, though it remains to respond to the economic consequences of the war that are already looming and worrying public opinion.
Given these facts, and as long as PASOK does not answer in a convincing way with whom it could govern, as long as it rules out a priori a possible coalition with ND, Maximou insists and invests in the narrative of self-reliance, even after a second election.
Obviously, ND is still far from these numbers and there are still many pitfalls on the road to the polls. But for Mitsotakis, there is no other alternative, especially since the opposition parties are also failing to present an alternative and convincing governance scheme. With this in mind, the Prime Minister is projecting at every opportunity the strong “currency” of political stability that allows for quick decisions at a time of increased challenges.
In this environment, therefore, as protothema.gr has written in time, for Mitsotakis there has never been any… wavering on the resort to early elections. “For Kyriakos Mitsotakis, it is an identity issue. That is, we cannot talk about anything else if we deviate from the tautonic issues, i.e. DNA issues, which is a logical DNA,” said government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis (SKAI 100.3) yesterday, meaningfully, regarding Mitsotakis’ refusal to enter the debate on early elections. He added that a contrary decision would be irresponsible at this juncture, as the country’s stability and strengthening abroad are strong acquisitions.
In the same vein, Adonis Georgiades, who also directed his arrows at PASOK after the congress decision not to cooperate with ND, said. Obviously the decision of the PASOK congress is a major political mistake,” the health minister stressed yesterday (SKAI).
