Developments surrounding former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in the aftermath of yesterday’s event for Giannis Boutaris, the intention of MP Symon Kedikoglou to resign, as well as statements by SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis about “manipulated elections” were commented on by SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos during his speech at the 11th Delphi Economic Forum.
Following Mr. Arvanitis’ recent statements, Mr. Famellos asked: “What does the European Prosecutor’s case file say? Does it say there was an organized plan linked to political figures for electoral gain? It does,” he said.
He claimed that OPEKEPE was “a model example of the Maximos Mansion line, the Mitsotakis line,” which, he argued, also extends to other public institutions where there is lack of transparency “to the detriment of public funds, with the aim of electoral gain.” He added: “It is part of the case file.”
He also asked: “Is it strange that we have said New Democracy attempted in Crete to distort, modify, and manipulate social consciousness in order to preserve its hold on power?”
Mr. Famellos added that “we cannot constantly be in the crosshairs of the European Prosecutor,” while also referring to developments in the centre-left, calling the fragmentation of progressive forces by PASOK and New Left a “serious mistake,” arguing that it ultimately “plays into New Democracy’s hands.”
He said: “We are not looking for the best second; we are looking for how this system will be removed,” and sent multiple messages to the internal party audience regarding the presence of Alexis Tsipras and the statements of Kedikoglou.
In this context, he insisted on the need for a unified progressive pole inside and outside Parliament, stressing that “SYRIZA wants convergence.”
At the same time, he emphasized that there is no alternative line beyond the party’s collective decisions, noting that SYRIZA’s official position is cooperation and convergence of progressive forces, and that all such decisions are binding for MPs.
“There is no scenario,” he said, rejecting internal speculation and insisting that discussions about internal division are over.
He concluded that the political responsibility of the progressive space will ultimately be judged by whether it manages to present a credible proposal to citizens, adding that SYRIZA will continue with those willing to contribute to a united progressive front.
