The government is attempting to accelerate interventions on housing, setting specific timetables for renovations, the use of public property, and the production of new stock housing, while, as was announced at the Delphi Economic Forum, the National Housing Strategy is in the final stretch, with its unveiling set for the summer.
The Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michaelidou identified three immediate milestones: by the end of May, a platform for the renovation of 30,000 houses, either for rent or for owner-occupation, with a subsidy of up to 36.000 euros, in 2026 the purchase of about 20 properties from the public portfolio is planned, while the first 700 homes from the reclamation of inactive camps are scheduled to be completed by 2029. At the same time, the student housing component is also progressing, with projects worth around €750 million expected to create 8,500 new beds, as well as interventions to upgrade existing halls of residence.
At the same time, the project is passing the market test for the first time, as the state brings property and private investors are asked to assess the viability of the projects, with returns placed in the 9%-10% range.
