The village of Makrisia in Ilia has been plunged into mourning after the death of 13-year-old Konstantinos, who was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter.
His grandmother said the family has been left «shattered», adding that the child «was riding fast on the scooter» and that «no one is to blame». His mother, for her part, described the 13-year-old as «an angel», saying that «God envied him».
The scooter «was a gift from the family. He used it all the time. He used it constantly and sometimes went too fast, as children do. No child is careful all the time. All children run», the boy’s grandmother told to the greek media.
«We lost our child. Konstantinos was my own blood. What can we say now? It was a terrible moment. Our little boy was riding his scooter. It happened. It just happened. That dark day came upon us. No one is to blame at all», she said.
Describing how the accident happened, she said there was «a parked car» on a narrow road.
«The other car was moving slowly, the driver was not going fast because it was inside the neighbourhood. He passed one scooter, made the manoeuvre, and Konstantinos happened to be alongside the parked car at that moment and there was no space», she said.
«We have nothing against the family or the man involved in the accident. They are standing by us in their own way. They, too, have their own drama to face. Konstantinos is the only thing I did not do – give birth to him. I raised him from the first moment he was born. His father had full custody. He is in absolute pain. The man is not to blame. Of course he did not want anything like this to happen. No one ever wants anything like this to happen», the grandmother added.
«God envied him»
«He was an angel. God envied him and he was an angel. I never bought my son a scooter. Not once. I was against it. Because we are divorced. My child wanted to stay close to his father by his own decision, as you know, as the law provides. I had very good relations with him and I would take him with me. I had my child very close to me. We spoke almost every day. I had a very good relationship with my little boy», Konstantinos’ mother said.
«My little boy always wanted a scooter», she added.
«The child was not responding»
Konstantinos’ uncle described the first moments after the accident.
«By the time I arrived, about three minutes later, the child had almost no consciousness. His father was shouting and shouting, but the child was not responding at all. The ambulances arrived. They used the equipment on him there. They took him to hospital and after an hour, an hour and a half, they told us that he had in fact been dead from the moment he arrived», he said.
Referring to the driver, he added: «Another scooter had passed in front of our boy first, and the man in the car was a little startled. It is a village, and when children are riding scooters fast, you know how it is».
A family friend said the driver was moving normally on the road and slowly.
«The other car was driving in its lane. He bears no responsibility. And he was going very slowly. You cannot speed there. It is a narrow village road. As you enter the village, it is downhill. The child had already picked up speed. There was a car parked on the right and he moved left without seeing that a car was coming», he said.
He noted that Konstantinos was an only child and that his father «was both mother and father to him».
«He worked for him. For him. He never denied him anything. He was a gentleman, and so was the child», the family friend added.
«You left me here»
After the accident, Konstantinos’ father posted a heartbreaking message on social media.
«Bro, that wasn’t fair… I took you everywhere with me and you left me here… You were only 13… Thank you all for your messages, it is very hard for me to reply. Say a prayer for my DJ… Have a good journey, my bro, and we will keep talking until we meet again #29_05_2025».
The authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
