Warm weather is expected during the three-day period from Sunday, May 10, to Tuesday, May 12, with temperatures reaching summer-like levels and African dust remaining in the atmosphere.
The heatwave is expected to peak on Tuesday, when temperatures in several parts of the country may reach as high as 34°C.
From Wednesday onward, however, temperatures are forecast to gradually decline, returning to more seasonally normal levels.
When the African dust will subside
African dust will continue to affect the country over the coming days, mainly in mild concentrations. Although northerly winds prevail over the Aegean at lower atmospheric levels, southerly winds at higher altitudes are favoring the transport of dust from North Africa.
The new dust episode will begin in western Greece and gradually spread eastward through Monday, while another episode of weak to moderate intensity is expected on Tuesday. From Wednesday onward, the phenomenon is expected to become mostly confined to southern Greece.
Local showers over mainland areas
For today, Sunday (10/5), forecasts indicate locally increased cloudiness with scattered rain showers mainly over western, central, and northern mainland regions, especially in mountainous areas. Brief showers are also possible over the central and southern Ionian Sea, though no severe weather phenomena are expected.
Winds will gradually shift to southerly directions from midday onward, favoring the transport of dust, while wind intensity is not expected to exceed 3–4 Beaufort in most areas.
Temperatures above normal seasonal levels
Temperatures will continue to rise, reaching 28–29°C across mainland areas today, while some places could locally record temperatures around 30°C.
As early as yesterday, Saturday (9/5), particularly high temperatures for the season were recorded in Heraklion, where the temperature reached 31.7°C.
Attica: Up to 32°C on Tuesday
In Attica, sunny conditions are expected with a few clouds becoming temporarily denser during the afternoon. Temperatures today will reach around 27°C, but a noticeable increase is expected by Tuesday, when the mercury could climb to 31–32°C.
