Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a message of determination for a deep institutional overhaul during his meeting with the European Union Commissioner for Democracy and Justice, Michael McGrath.

The Prime Minister emphasized that these changes will not be “technical in nature,” but will become a central political issue in the 2027 elections, so that – as he said – “they receive the clear popular legitimacy required.”

“We are launching a constitutional revision process, difficult and demanding, which requires two different parliamentary terms to be completed,” the Prime Minister said, describing an “ambitious agenda of institutional reforms.” As he explained, at the center of the revision are changes in the method of selecting the leadership of the supreme courts, with an active role for judges themselves, and the revision of the article on ministerial responsibility, so as to limit the role of Parliament and ensure a fair, depoliticized judgment.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that the goal is to restore citizens’ trust in institutions and strengthen the independence of the judiciary, saying characteristically that “the erosion of trust in democratic institutions is a widespread problem in all democracies.”
