Six of the eight defendants in the bank robbery case in Kato Tithorea, Fthiotida, were ordered into pre-trial detention following their apologies (testimonies) today at the courts of the former Evelpidon School complex.
The eight defendants appeared today before the investigating magistrate under strict security measures, while a crowd of supporters had gathered outside the courts shouting slogans in their support. Following their appearances, six of the defendants were remanded in custody, while only two were released under restrictive conditions.
The prosecution had brought serious charges against the defendants. Specifically, they face five felony charges as well as a series of misdemeanors. Among others, the suspects are being prosecuted for forming and joining a criminal organization, aggravated theft committed jointly, repeatedly and professionally, armed robbery committed jointly and repeatedly, and aggravated illegal possession of firearms (including military rifles and grenades). They are also charged with illegal possession and carrying of weapons, drug possession for personal use, violence against public officials, and tampering with license plates.
They are reported to have reserved their right to provide further explanations at a later stage.
During the exit of the accused from the courthouse, tensions escalated, and police used chemical agents and stun grenades.
