Mitsotakis: Elections in 2027, only through a third New Democracy government term does the sure path to Greece 2030 pass (updated)

Mitsotakis: The 2027 elections, the road to Greece 2030 passes through a third term for New Democracy

Prime Minister and President of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave the signal for New Democracy’s electoral victory and a third consecutive governing term from the podium of the party’s 16th congress (and 7th under his leadership). “Let’s go,” he said, while rushing to point out that many months still remain before the ballot boxes are set up, which he repeated will happen in 2027.

Mr. Mitsotakis, criticizing the opposition, called on New Democracy officials to resist toxicity and populism and stressed that the dilemma is not “Mitsotakis or chaos,” but rather Mitsotakis against any other political leader opposing him. “We must not become part of the toxicity; we are not concerned with who will be second or third. We are first. But for New Democracy this first place is combined with only one word, and that word is responsibility. Greeks ask to trust them at a time when society has four basic demands: stability, cohesion, consistency, continuity,” he said and added: “I heard that the opposition was annoyed because on Friday I used and posed a question about the three-digit telephone number. Who will react, who will coordinate with foreigners? These are not difficult, coercive, or extreme dilemmas. This is the reality citizens must take into account in a world in constant turmoil. It is not my job to beautify situations or hide obstacles.”

At the same time, the prime minister stressed that history is written by those who are present, and that New Democracy has no face control: “We do not have face control at the entrance, nor are we divided into squares and balconies. We are an open party. We are a launching pad for action, a party that does not easily fit into molds. History is always written by those who are present and participate in the struggles,” he said.

At another point in his speech, Mr. Mitsotakis noted that “this contract of truth that we signed with citizens must now be rewritten as a contract of results. To the first two cycles we must open a third one that will carry our slogan together for a strong Greece of 2030. It will not be easy. We are going to try to do something that has never happened in Greek history: to win three four-year terms. However, I have confidence not only in the abilities of our party but also in the judgment of the citizens.”

Mr. Mitsotakis made extensive references to the government’s work in infrastructure, the economy, development, security, and education, while closing he called on all of New Democracy’s forces into action, saying characteristically: “Do not wait for the election period. Starting tomorrow, everyone’s place is outside, in the embrace of society. To transfer there the fire of this congress — Let’s go together for the Greece of 2030.”

“Shall we go? Get out there, talk with society, do not wait for the elections. Let’s go together for the Greece of 2030,” Mr. Mitsotakis concluded.

The dilemma is not “Mitsotakis or chaos”

“In July 2027 our homeland assumes the presidency of the European Union. So let everyone answer who else, if not us — the party of Europe — knows and can negotiate national interests within the framework of this great responsibility. Who has the strength to lead Europe in the critical leaps it must make? We repeat it: many will try to formulate the dilemma of the next elections as Mitsotakis or chaos. No: Mitsotakis or Androulakis, Mitsotakis or Famellos, Mitsotakis or Velopoulos, Mitsotakis or Konstantopoulou — that is the dilemma the Greek citizens will ultimately answer. They must weigh, compare, judge, and answer.”

“I heard that the opposition was annoyed because on Friday I posed a question about the three-digit phone number. Who will react, who will coordinate with foreigners? These are not difficult, coercive, or extreme dilemmas. This is the reality citizens must take into account in a world in constant turmoil. It is not my job to beautify situations or hide obstacles.”

“We will permanently close every account with the past”

“The congress proved the political strength of the ideas of the party founded by Konstantinos Karamanlis 52 years ago.

  • We have a stable compass; we do not choose opponents. That is how we won two electoral battles, and that is how we will win the third.
  • Our enemies are the problems. That is how we won two contests, and that is how we will win the third. Look around the political landscape: it is a national necessity for a strong mandate to ensure that our homeland does not experience situations of instability.
  • We will not go back three four-year terms, but we will permanently close every account with the past.”

New Democracy is the party of the many

“Every time a new frigate enters the naval base, every time a new road is inaugurated, every time an unemployed person finds work, every time an employee or pensioner gets an increase — that is the product of all of us.

“To those whispering that we are struggling or stumbling, let them look around here. Some people traveled 10–12 hours and spent money from their own hardship.”

Mitsotakis on the opposition

“Greeks ask to trust them at a time when society has four main demands: stability, cohesion, consistency, continuity.

“We are not concerned with who will be second or third. We are first, but for New Democracy this first place is combined with only one word: responsibility. And responsibility means work and results.

“As for the populists and the armchair patriots, we leave them prisoners of television panels. Do not be tempted to enter confrontations by raising your voices. We have many arguments to explain to citizens what we have done. We trust the judgment of the sensible citizen.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis sets priorities for the next four years

“The path of reforms must continue. We still have pending issues from the past that must be resolved. By 2030 they must be settled, and only New Democracy is the party that can make this happen.

“Society asks for stability, cohesion, continuity, and consistency.

“We must not become part of toxicity. We are not concerned with who will be second or third; we are first. As for the populists and armchair patriots, we leave them prisoners of shouting on television panels. Do not be tempted into confrontation. We have arguments.”

“Let’s go win three four-year terms”

“This contract of truth that we signed with citizens must now be rewritten as a contract of results. To the first two cycles we must open a third one carrying our slogan together for a strong Greece of 2030.

“It will not be easy. We are going to attempt something never before achieved in Greek history: winning three four-year terms. However, I trust not only our party’s abilities but also the judgment of the citizens.”

No active occupation in any public university

“There are many visible victories in the difficult battle against violence and occupations in our universities. Yes, it is important that today there is not a single active occupation in any public university, and every time police assistance is requested, the police are present.”

Mitsotakis: Elections will take place in 2027; it is our duty to also say big “no’s”

“I repeat: elections will take place in 2027. We still have a lot of work to do as a government. I separate the work of the party from that of the government. Ministers must complete all Recovery Fund projects, and you will see hundreds of those projects inaugurated.

“It is our duty to say big ‘no’s’ as well. This party will not give in to the temptations of handout politics.”

National responsibility not to leave the next generation with major debt

“We have a duty to constantly remind people of the impressive reduction in public debt. Our children will not carry the burdens created by previous generations. Just as you as parents do not want to leave your children with debts you created, so too we as a government cannot leave a large debt to the next generation. Its reduction is a national responsibility and national imperative.”

Mitsotakis: We are not divided into squares and balconies

The prime minister said: “We do not have face control at the entrance, nor are we divided into squares and balconies. We are an open party. “We look directly at the great challenges coming from the future,” says Mitsotakis

“What separates us from the other political forces is our ability to look directly at and confront the major challenges coming from the future: demographics, artificial intelligence, geopolitical crises.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the congress podium

“Only through a third government term passes the sure road for the Greece of 2030,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, opening the speech that concluded the proceedings of the party’s 16th congress.

  • “I saw pride in what we have achieved over the past seven years, but also determination to accomplish what still needs to be done.”
  • “I remember my first participation, back in 1986, at the second congress of New Democracy. I spent considerable time speaking with officials from every corner of the country. I saw pride in what we have achieved. We have every right to be proud of what our party has done over the past seven years.”
  • “I also saw healthy concern about how we can become better and improve our shortcomings. But I saw in the eyes of all our delegates that Greece deserves to achieve goals that only New Democracy can make reality.”
  • “Greece has been transformed into one vast construction site; now it is time to inaugurate these projects across the country. Especially in energy, this is proving to be a strong asset for our economic and geopolitical upgrade.”
