A student from Ilia is being treated in serious but stable condition while intubated at the University General Hospital of Patras in Rio, after apparently contracting meningitis.

According to the local website patrisnews.com, the serious incident occurred last Tuesday when the student developed a high fever and alarming symptoms.

He was rushed to the hospital in Pyrgos, where doctors identified a strong suspicion of meningitis. Considering his condition particularly critical, they decided to immediately transfer him to the University General Hospital in Rio, Patras.

Despite reports suggesting there is no reason for concern, since the student had been absent from school during the past week, parents appear highly worried and say they have not received any official information. Complaints from parents requesting clear answers about the situation have already been submitted to the Regional Directorate of Special Education in Patras.

Concern has also been expressed by the Prefectural Association of Parents, Guardians and People with Disabilities of Ilia “Ilis,” which, in an urgent letter, referred to a lack of information provided to parents and staff.

The association’s letter states in part:

“The Prefectural Association of Parents, Guardians and People with Disabilities of Ilia ‘Ilis’ expresses its deep concern regarding reports of a confirmed meningitis case in a student at a special education school, as well as the absence of official information for parents, staff, and the relevant authorities.

Particular concern is caused by the fact that, according to information brought to our attention, the school unit continues to operate while a close family contact of the ill student is present at the school, without any information having been provided regarding instructions from the competent health authorities and the implementation of the required protocols.

Given that this concerns a special education structure with vulnerable students, we urgently request:

  • Official information regarding the incident.
  • Clarification as to whether the National Public Health Organization and the competent public health services have been informed.
  • Information on the measures taken within the school.
  • Clarification regarding the presence of close family contacts of the ill student in the school environment.
  • Assurance that all required health protocols are being fully observed for the protection of students and staff.

The protection of the health and safety of children and employees must be an absolute priority and requires responsible and immediate information for the school community.”
