A quick but fairly strong weather system will affect the country in the coming hours, according to meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias of protothema.gr.

Main features will include rain, strong thunderstorms, squalls, intense lightning activity, and possible hailstorms.

More specifically, today, Friday June 12, 2026, the day will start with fairly sunny conditions in most areas. However, from midday onward, rain and intermittent strong thunderstorms will develop in central and northern mainland Greece.

The highest risk areas for severe phenomena are Thessaly, Epirus, Halkidiki, Serres, Kavala, Evia, and the Sporades. In fact, in Halkidiki, Evia, and the Sporades, the intense weather will persist until Saturday morning.

Winds will blow from northwesterly directions, reaching locally up to 7 Beaufort in both the Ionian and the Aegean Seas.

Maximum temperatures will reach 33°C in mainland Greece, while in Crete and the Dodecanese they will range around 31–32°C.

In Athens, rain and thunderstorms are expected after midday. Winds will be northwesterly at 3–5 Beaufort, and temperatures will range from 20°C to 33°C.

In Thessaloniki, unstable weather is forecast, with rain and thunderstorms mainly during the warm hours of the day. The “Vardaris” wind will reach up to 5 Beaufort in the Thermaic Gulf, while temperatures will not exceed 25°C.

On Saturday morning, attention will mainly focus on Evia, Halkidiki, and the Sporades, where strong rain and thunderstorms will occur. Some localized phenomena will also appear in eastern and southern parts of the country, gradually weakening. Temperatures will drop, while meltemi winds in the Aegean will locally reach up to 7 Beaufort.

On Sunday, the weather will improve with plenty of sunshine and temperatures up to 30–31°C.

From the new week onward, summer conditions return, with high temperatures.
