The Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, concluded his visit to Patras, the capital of Achaia, with inspections at three hospitals and the city’s Northern Sector Health Center.
He first visited the Karamandaneio Children’s Hospital of Patras, where renovation works in the operating theatres are nearing completion, as announced, while damage repairs caused by the fire on the hospital’s third floor have already been completed.
In his statements, Mr. Georgiadis said: “I am here to inspect the works, which will be delivered within the coming weeks and will completely transform the hospital,” adding: “There is no expense and no political decision we will not take to keep Karamandaneio standing and further improve it, the only pediatric hospital in Western Greece. And we will resolve the issue with radiologists almost immediately, using all the tools we already have in place.”

He then visited the “Agios Andreas” hospital, where work is progressing on the new pharmacy and materials warehouse, with completion expected by the end of October.
In his remarks, Mr. Georgiadis said, among other things: “The pharmacy project is progressing slightly delayed, but it will be delivered and operational within the year, which is a major upgrade for the hospital. At the same time, we held a long meeting regarding the linear accelerator to see how we can improve waiting times and the number of treated patients. Although we have brought in a very new machine and additional staff, as requested, there is still difficulty in serving all patients. Returning to the ministry, we will examine what additional solution we can provide, while clarifying that all requests that were submitted to us have been accepted and implemented.”

He then visited the Northern Sector Health Center of Patras, where he inspected works for the installation of a new modern MRI scanner and mammography machine. He noted: “This health center is a real hospital at the level of primary healthcare, but with excellent equipment,” adding: “The works will be completed in two weeks and we will receive the relevant certifications from ‘Demokritos’. We have brought new machines, a digital mammograph, and new dental units. I believe we will be able to inaugurate the fully reconstructed and upgraded center in early September. I want once again to tell the public to trust health centers in primary care. Here they will find easier appointments, faster service, quicker test results, and this will help relieve pressure on large hospitals, which we need for very serious cases.”
The final stop of the Minister’s visit in Patras was the University Hospital, where he was briefed on ongoing renovation works.

In particular, it was announced that the first phase of the renovation of the existing Emergency Department will be delivered by Friday, followed by the second phase of the project. At the same time, extension works of the Emergency Department are ongoing, as well as the construction of the new Day Care Unit “Nikos Kourkoulos,” funded by a donation from Marianna V. Latsis.
Mr. Georgiadis stated: “I will not tire of expressing my gratitude to the great lady of the NHS, Mrs. Marianna Latsis, who immediately agreed when I asked her to create here in Rio, for the patients of Western Greece, a new day care oncology unit,” adding: “I also want to reveal something else. A few days ago, I asked her to upgrade the robotic machine we had originally ordered to a much better and more expensive one. She immediately said yes, so that this center will have the best equipment, and the inauguration will take place in February 2027. In our recruitment announcement, which concludes tomorrow, we have included three oncology positions so that doctors can start working here from day one. Our goal with this excellent unit is, first, to relieve all patients in Western Greece who need chemotherapy with dignity, and second, to free up space in the main building of the university hospital, so we can add beds and eliminate gurneys, ensuring no patient is left in discomfort.”
At the same time, Mr. Georgiadis emphasized that “with these projects, the Emergency Department and the ‘Nikos Kourkoulos’ unit, the University Hospital gains another 20 years of life, and we are truly proud.”
