A decision approving the inclusion of island municipalities in the program “Interventions for Drinking Water Supply and Water Management” was signed today at a special event hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The decision was signed by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou under the ministry’s Sectoral Development Program.

Also attending the event were Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vasilis Kikilias, South Aegean Regional Governor George Hatzimarkos, and New Democracy MPs Giannis Pappas and Manolis Konsolas (Dodecanese), Christos Triantopoulos and Christos Boukoros (Magnesia), Dionysis Aktypis (Zakynthos), and Lefteris Avgenakis (Heraklion, Crete).

The mayors of Naxos and Small Cyclades (Dimitris Lianos), Amorgos (Lefteris Karaiskos), Skopelos (Stamatis Perissis), Alonissos (Panagiotis Anagnostou), Zakynthos (George Stasinopoulos), Viannos (Pavlos Baritakis), and Leros (Timotheos Kottakis) also participated. The mayors of Rhodes (Alexandros Koliadis) and Astypalaia (Nikos Komineas) joined via teleconference. Also present was the Ministry’s Secretary General for Natural Environment and Water, Petros Varelidis.

Under the program, 10 projects across nine island municipalities will receive funding totaling more than €15 million. These projects aim to improve water supply conditions by reducing water losses through the repair and modernization of aging networks, expanding water distribution through new infrastructure, and ensuring adequate supply in drought-prone areas through the installation of new desalination units and related supporting works.

Ionian Islands

• Installation of a drinking water treatment plant in Zakynthos

Crete

• Upgrades to water supply networks in Viannos

Following the signing ceremony, Minister Stavros Papastavrou stated:

“Today, under the Drinking Water Supply and Water Management axis of the Ministry’s Sectoral Development Program, we signed funding agreements for 10 projects on nine Greek islands aimed at improving infrastructure and water supply networks. This is not an isolated intervention. It is part of a comprehensive policy for responsible water resource management, based on planning, cooperation, and a focus on the areas facing the greatest pressures.

It follows the National Water Strategy that we recently submitted for public consultation and precedes forthcoming legislation aimed at addressing the fragmentation of water service providers.

The government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has demonstrated that it stands by the regions, and especially our islands—not with words, but with actions. With funding, projects, and interventions that improve everyday life.”
