France’s home-visit medical service SOS Medecins recorded an 85% increase in deaths among people aged 75 and over during the heatwave week of June 22–28, compared with the previous week, according to its latest weekly report.
Specifically, 513 deaths were recorded among people aged 75 and older during the week, compared with 278 deaths the week before.
The service also reported that home medical interventions for this age group increased by 14%, particularly for fever, general malaise, and anxiety, reaching levels higher than those recorded in previous years.
SOS Médecins further noted that, across all age groups, interventions for heatstroke and dehydration rose by 480% and 316%, respectively.
During the week of June 22–28, emergency department visits increased by 11%, while hospital admissions rose by 19% compared with the previous week.
