“When Greece begins operating the F-35, it will be flying the same aircraft as the U.S. Air Force,” U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle said during an event at the U.S. Embassy marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Referring to Greece’s participation in the F-35 programme, Guilfoyle said the acquisition would give the country “greater deterrence capability” and allow it to operate more closely with the United States and other NATO allies.

Greece has placed an initial order for 20 fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets, with an option to acquire a further 20. Production is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Greek aircraft due for delivery in the United States from 2028, where they will initially be used for pilot and technician training.

The first F-35s are expected to arrive in Greece around 2030 and be based at the 117th Combat Wing in Andravida, in the western Peloponnese.

“There is no capability gap; the formation is absolutely solid,” Guilfoyle said. “This will be the most advanced aircraft ever to fly in Greece, and we will be proud to fly alongside you.”
