“I’m not here to comment, but to preserve unity,” NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said during the press conference following the conclusion of the Alliance’s Summit in Ankara, when asked about Turkey’s casus belli against Greece.
Specifically, Mr. Rutte was responding to a question from a Turkish journalist, who referred to the Greek Prime Minister’s recent remarks regarding Turkey’s casus belli against Greece.
Rutte replied:
“I’ve said this before on other issues as well: sometimes there are matters between Allies. We are an Alliance of 32 Allies, so naturally there can be bilateral discussions. Of course, you may ask me what my personal view is on this issue. But I am not a commentator. I am here to preserve unity—or at least I do my very best to preserve the unity of the Alliance. That also means there are discussions between Allies, and sometimes even disagreements or irritation. But I do not comment publicly, so that behind the scenes I can be helpful if needed.”
