Emergency heatwave warning as thermometer set to hit 43C in three regions

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an orange warning for extreme heat set to grip parts of Greece tomorrow, Wednesday 22 July, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 43 degrees Celsius in some areas

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an orange warning for high temperatures expected tomorrow, Wednesday 22 July, with the mercury forecast to reach as high as 43 degrees Celsius in certain areas.

According to the emergency bulletin, the highest temperatures are expected in Thessaly, eastern Central Greece and the eastern Peloponnese.

Thessaly: 41 to 42 degrees Celsius, locally reaching as high as 43 degrees.

Eastern Central Greece: 41 to 42 degrees Celsius, while in Attica, the region encompassing the capital Athens, temperatures will reach 40 to 41 degrees.

Eastern Peloponnese: 41 to 42 degrees Celsius.

EMY noted that the emergency bulletin will be updated during Wednesday morning based on the latest forecasting data.

Today

Particularly high temperatures were recorded on Tuesday, July 21, in many parts of the country, with the heat wave continuing and temperatures locally exceeding 41 degrees Celsius.

According to data from the network of automatic weather stations operated by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, the highest maximum temperature of the day was recorded in Oleni, Elis, where the mercury reached 41.4°C, confirming the intensity of the hot air masses affecting the country.

Cooler on Thursday

The heat wave will begin subsiding after Wednesday in western and northern Greece, while unstable conditions and dust transport persist there, before temperatures plunge by 8 to 10 degrees on Thursday with strong northerly winds.
