Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a message of security, deterrence, and national confidence during his visit to the military observation post on Agathonisi, the first stop of his tour of the remote Aegean island.

Standing beneath the large Greek flag, the Prime Minister stressed that the strong presence of the Armed Forces serves as a guarantee of security for residents of the eastern Aegean islands.

From the remote island of Agathonisi, Mitsotakis sent a firm message to migrant smuggling networks, making clear that Greece will continue to effectively protect its borders.

“We are sending a clear message to the disgraceful networks of smugglers that we will prevent them from exploiting desperate people in order to bring them to Greece and Europe,” he said.

“Our islanders must feel safe with our Armed Forces,” Mitsotakis stated, adding that the military outpost also plays an important role in addressing illegal migration.

The Prime Minister described it as a “special honour” to stand beneath the large flag flying on Agathonisi, noting that from the country’s easternmost point, Greece sends a clear message of “deterrence, responsibility, and national confidence.”

Following his visit to the military post, Kyriakos Mitsotakis toured the Diachronic Archaeological Museum of Agathonisi, which was completed with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund and highlights the history and cultural heritage of the remote island.
