Police confirmed no danger was found following security checks – Earlier reports of a possible drone sighting had disrupted airport operations
German police have given the all-clear at Nuremberg Airport following a major emergency response involving an aircraft arriving from the Greek island of Corfu.
Police said checks carried out after the aircraft landed confirmed that there was no danger.
Earlier, large numbers of police officers had cordoned off the airport, while the operation also caused disruption to bus and underground services serving the airport.
The emergency response began shortly before the flight from Corfu was due to land. An airport spokesman confirmed that the aircraft had landed safely, while German news agency dpa reported that an emergency code had been activated beforehand.
Eurofighter jets escort aircraft
According to German media reports, German Air Force Eurofighter jets were scrambled to escort the aircraft through German airspace before its landing. The fighter jets subsequently withdrew.
Germany’s air traffic control authority said the jets belonged to Tactical Air Wing 74, based at Neuburg an der Donau in Bavaria. Two Eurofighters are stationed at the airbase on round-the-clock standby, ready to take off immediately if required.
Earlier drone reports disrupt airport operations
The airport had already experienced disruption in the early hours of Tuesday (13 October), following reports of a possible drone sighting in the area.
Police said three pilots had independently reported seeing an unidentified object during take-off or landing, which they believed might have been a drone.
Airport border police immediately launched an investigation in cooperation with German air traffic control. A police helicopter was also deployed, but no drone was found.
The searches caused temporary disruption to air traffic. According to an airport spokesman, six flights were delayed, comprising two arrivals and four departures.
Two aircraft scheduled to land in Nuremberg were also diverted as a precaution to Cologne and Prague before later continuing to their original destination.
It remains unclear whether the incident involving the flight from Corfu was connected to the earlier reports of a possible drone sighting.
