Recorded conversations included in a major criminal investigation in Greece have shed light on the extravagant lifestyle allegedly enjoyed by Konstantinos Firinidis, a central suspect in a multimillion-euro fraud case involving a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that raised money for seriously ill children.

According to the case file, investigators believe the organisation was used to collect millions of euros in donations under the pretext of helping children facing serious medical conditions. Instead, the suspects are accused of diverting funds while enjoying luxury holidays, expensive restaurants, five-star hotels and lavish nights out.

Among the evidence gathered by investigators are conversations involving Firinidis, hotel employees, nightclub staff and a serving police officer. The exchanges provide a glimpse into the spending habits and personal dealings of a man at the centre of a criminal investigation that has attracted widespread attention in Greece.

‘I usually book the suite’

One conversation included in the case file captures Firinidis calling a luxury hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, to enquire about booking a suite for just a few hours.

He introduces himself as a frequent customer, explaining that he normally stays in a particular corner suite.

Firinidis: Hello, I’d like to ask something. I’m actually a customer. I come quite often.

Hotel employee: All right.

Firinidis: I usually book the suite on the second floor, or is it the first? The corner one. I’m in Thessaloniki for a little while and I need a room for a few hours. Is that possible?

Hotel employee: You mean for day use?

Firinidis: Yes, to come for a few hours, right now, for example.

The employee explains that he can use the room until 6pm under a daytime booking arrangement, but staying until 8pm would require paying for an overnight stay.

After checking his customer profile, the employee quotes a price of approximately €480 for the deluxe suite.

Hotel employee: I can see the deluxe suite for today. How many people?

Firinidis: Two.

Hotel employee: The suite comes to €480. Let me see whether we can offer you a better rate.

Firinidis: I’d like the suite overlooking the garden.

Hotel employee: That’s €487.

Firinidis: All right. I’ll definitely come. Is there any chance I can pay in cash?

The exchange is among the conversations prosecutors have included in the investigation, which examines the suspects’ financial activities and spending.

‘€1,000 on drinks, €500 for you’

Another recorded conversation concerns a night out at a Greek bouzouki nightclub, a popular form of live entertainment where guests reserve tables, order expensive bottles of alcohol and often spend substantial amounts on flowers thrown towards performers.

In the exchange, Firinidis speaks with a maître d’ about arranging a table, specifying how much he is prepared to spend and discussing the presence of women at the venue.

Maître d’: What do you want to put down for drinks? A thousand euros? Shall I arrange €1,000 worth of drinks?

Firinidis: Yes.

Maître d’: Shall I make it €1,000 for the drinks?

Firinidis: Yes, yes, yes.

Maître d’: And the flowers, whatever you tell me.

Firinidis: Great. And €500 for you?

Maître d’: Fine, whatever you like.

Firinidis: Yes, my dear. Perfect.

The conversation continues with Firinidis explaining that he intends to arrive with a small group rather than a large entourage.

Firinidis: There’ll only be three or four of us. I’m not bringing a whole group this time. I don’t want that.

Maître d’: Three or four, and we can have women sitting behind you. Do you want women or not?

Firinidis: I do. How did we get it so wrong last time?

The discussion suggests a planned expenditure of at least €1,500 on drinks and a payment to the maître d’, excluding any additional spending on flowers.

‘Bet on over 2.5 goals’

The case file also contains a conversation between Firinidis and a serving Greek police officer concerning betting on a youth football match.

The exchange centres on a fixture between the under-19 teams of Iraklis and Asteras Tripolis, two Greek football clubs.

Firinidis urges the officer to place bets on the match producing more than 2.5 goals and on both teams scoring.

Firinidis: Bet, bet on over 2.5 goals in the Iraklis under-19 match, and both teams to score. Put money on it, put money on it.

Police officer: What time are they playing?

Firinidis: They’re playing now. Put it on at half-time.

Police officer: What did you say? Iraklis?

Firinidis: Iraklis under-19 against Asteras Tripolis. Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.

Police officer: Over 2.5 and both teams to score?

Firinidis: Yes.

Police officer: OK.

The conversation forms part of the wider investigation into alleged criminal activities involving the suspects, including possible football match manipulation.

The exchange does not, by itself, establish that the match was fixed or that the officer acted unlawfully. However, its inclusion in the case file illustrates the range of activities being examined by investigators.

Taken together, the recorded conversations offer a striking contrast between the charitable purpose presented to donors and the expensive lifestyle allegedly enjoyed by those under investigation.

The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. match-fixing.
