Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis assured members of Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defence that the government is determined to proceed with the project to lay the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection cable and that the country is prepared to deal with any possible reaction from Turkey.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, which is currently underway, the foreign minister said, according to information obtained by protothema.gr, that if Turkey attempts to obstruct the laying of the cable, an operational response will follow.
However, Mr. Gerapetritis reportedly reiterated his assessment that the neighbouring country will not oppose a project linked to French interests and European funding.
It should be noted that the committee is meeting at Mr. Gerapetritis’s initiative so that he can brief MPs on transatlantic relations and developments at the United Nations.
