The European Union decided to authorize the use of military force against human traffickers in the Mediterranean Sea.
In June, the EU launched European Union Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR Med) “to undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and dispose of vessels and enabling assets used or suspected of being used by migrant smugglers or traffickers.” Now it will be allowed to stop and if necessary destroy boats which are used to carry illegal migrants. Military forces will be also able to arrest traffickers given that they will not enter the territory of Libya
During the Ministerial Conference which took place in Brussels, EU pointed out that now “the conditions have been met” to launch the new phase of military operation.
To enhance the efficiency of this operation, seven more warships are needed, some of which will be equipped with medical facilities, as well as helicopters, submarines and unmanned aircraft.
