Refugee handbooks were discovered by Sky News after one was washed up on the Greek island of Lesbos. Written in Arabic, the pocket-sized guide book contained tips, maps and phone numbers of organizations. The booklet’s idyllic cover featured a photo of a young man gazing into the sunset on the beach with oars at his feet as he prepared to make the perilous crossing.
The guide book also has the details of organizations that can help refugees, such as the Red Cross and the UNHCR. There is also a 24-hour hotline in the guide, outlined as a “life-saving service to give to refugees.”
It is believed that the w2eu (‘Welcome to Europe’) organization is one of the creators of the booklet. A volunteer from w2eu told Sky News that activists from the network had distrubited the guides for free in Turkey to help refugees who may find themselves in trouble. “They are going to go anyway, so it’s better if we give them advice,” said the Arabic-speaking volunteer from Austria.
