Twelve foreign nationals are identified as assailants and accessories in the homicide of a Iraqi man found dead in an Athens inner city apartment last January, an incident authorities linked to a migrant smuggling network.
The suspects were identified as three Iraqis — 23, 34, and 46 — a 31-year-old Georgian man and no less than eight Afghan men.
The 32-year-old victim was found in an apartment in the Aghios Panteleimonas district of the Greek capital.
Police said two of the Iraqis along with the Georgian man would smuggle illegal migrants into Greece from Turkey only to keep them captive in the apartment until a pre-arranged fee was paid.
One of the two Iraqis is currently incarcerated in a Greek jail on trafficking convictions, while the 46-year-old reportedly fled back to Turkey.
