The educational community breathed a sign of relief on Monday as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced that there would be a suspension of the 23% VAT hike in private education.
Addressing lawmakers, Alexis Tsipras announced the suspension of the VAT increase to 23% at least until the 2016 budget is voted through. In this way, the government hopes to have enough time to present new reforms that would squeeze equivalent amounts to line state coffers.
Charalambos Kyrailidiss, the representative of the national federation representing Greek private schools, told Proto Thema that though there was “relief” there is still reserve until the decision is finalized. The standing situation requires the imposition of the new hike that has been frozen until October 16, however Kyrailidis hopes that “logic” will prevail and that all party’s will keep their pre-election pledges.
