The German government is considering the possibility of sending ground troops into Syria on condition that there is a UN resolution which could cover any military intervention, according to an article published by Der Spiegel citing government sources.

Officials close to Chancellor Angela Merkel believe it’s very likely German troops to be called on to supervise a negotiated ceasefire.

They expect that Vladimir Putin will be willing to withdraw the Russian forces from Syria, judging by his moves to co-operate more closely on the crisis with the USA in recent weeks.

Therefore, it would be easier to pass a resolution for a joint action in Syria, since previous efforts to organize a UN intervention was prevented by Russia which supported Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
