A bilingual theatrical performance of Antigone, Sophocles was presented in Ancient Greek and in Greek sign language by Ecclesiastical Lyceum of the Rizarios School and the Junior and Senior High School of Agia Paraskevi for Speech-and-Hearing Impaired Students, under the auspices of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO.
The performance was presented with classical Hellenistic pronunciation and with original Byzantine music score for chorals, composed by the high-school student performers, within the framework of the Cultural Program of School Activities of the Ministry of Education of Greece.
The event took place on June 22, 2015, in front of the Church of St. George at the school yard of the Ecclesiastical Lyceum of the Rizarios School with an audience of 800 spectators.
That was the first time that hearing actors are joined by speech-and-hearing impaired actors to perform classic drama in Ancient Greek and simultaneously in Sign Language. It was also the first time in the last 111 years, since 1904, in Greece that classic drama was performed in Ancient Greek.
