Farmers continue tractor protests around Greece continue: guide to road blocks

Traffic mayhem: Tempi road block to continue for 12 hours

Newsroom February 2 10:09

Farmers are escalating their protest action against planned pension reforms and tax changes with an expansion of road blocks and customs around Greece ahead of national strike action around the country on Thursday. Union representatives from 12 road blocks currently in place met with 24 mayors of regional Greece before deciding to continue their block at the Vale of Tempe, a gorge in the Tempi municipality of northern Thessaly, Greece, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday. There will also be intermittent two-hour and three-hour road blocks around the country throughout the day.

Farmers say that there will be road closers at the national highway of Viotia, Central Greece, at the 110th-km of Kastrou whereas other colleagues will be at the 90th-km.

Farmers at Nikaia have also called for a national meeting of representatives of road blocks on Sunday, February 7, at noon in Nikaia, Piraeus.

There are seven blocks at Fthiotida at the northern shoreline of Central Greece on the National Athens-Lamia highway, however two of these will close at the 140th km of Atalanti at noon and the 210th km of Anthili at 2 p.m.

The old national Lamia-Athens highway will be closed at Amphikleia at the border between Fthiotida and Viotia, whereas the Lamia-Domokou road will also be closed from noon to 2 p.m.

Committees of independent blocks in the Peloponnese, specifically Arcadia, Lakonia, Argolida, Messinia and Corinth are also escalating their efforts.

Farmers from the island of Crete escalated their protest on Monday morning when they took to the streets of Chania with tractors before gathering outside the vice-regional building. They took down the flag of the European Union and burnt it.

Mobilizations also took place in Athens with dozens of tractors around the Markopoulos junction at the Attiki Highway. As a result, there was traffic leading to and from the Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport.
